Seattle Wedding Photography on the Skansonia

Kelly Johnson and Garth Merrill were married aboard the historic old ferry MV Skansonia on Lake Union at the end of January on a dark and rainy Saturday afternoon. Rain is not an issue aboard the Skansonia since it is great for weddings rain or shine. The wedding went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time. After dinner and the cake cutting and toasts DJ Sean Wheatley of Seattle Parties played some fantastic music and there was some great dancing by Kelly and Garth and their friends.

I will highlight a few pictures here and include them in the mini-slideshow below. Congratulations to Garth and Kelly.

Seattle Wedding Photographer -Pioneer Park Pavilion Wedding

Before you view the candid wedding photos of Elizabeth and Jason, I would like to have you note that this is one of the final posts to this blog here at blogspot because it is moving. My previous was of the large group panorama wedding portrait of Elizabeth and Jason's wedding at Pioneer Park Pavilion in Steilacoom, WA and I would like to finish my coverage of their wedding by posting an edited selection of the candid wedding photographs. They were married on Friday May 29th and it was a beautiful day for a wedding. Warm, sunny and with a gorgeous view. Perfect for an outdoor wedding in a great setting at Pioneer Park Pavilion with a view of the Olympics across Puget Sound. The wedding photography begins back at their apartment with shots of Jason getting into his formal Air Force uniform.

Jason's dad stood by to help him get dressed.

And so Jason being almost ready I headed across town to catch up with Elizabeth at the hair salon Rumours.

After her hair and make up was ready Elizabeth got into her wedding gown with the help of her mom and her friends.

Something old for good luck.

Elizabeth and Jason have an affection for squirrels and along with the something blue on her bouquet, she added a small critter.

Elizabeth got walked down the aisle by her mom who flew in from Ohio for the wedding.

Jason see Elizabeth in her wedding dress for the first time as she approched with her mom.

After the ceremony and some family photos and the panorama, everyone went out to the reception at Jake's Bar and Bistro.

Elizabeth had this beautiful cocktail.

Elizabeth got up on the bar for jason to remove the garter from her leg.

Saying goodbye to friends after wards.

On the spur of the moment they decided to stop off at McDonalds for a wedding ice cream cone instead of a cake. Elizabeth playfully dabbed Jasons nose with her cone.

Jason took it in good spirits, though there was talk of someone getting a unicorn.

All in all it was a fun ending to a great afternoon wedding in Steilacoom, WA.

Wedding Panoramic Portrait

Elizabeth and Jason were married around noon last weekend at Pioneer Park Pavilion in Steilacoom, WA. It was in the middle of this great stretch of fantastic weather we have been having. My specialty is candid wedding photography and the vast majority of wedding photos I make are indeed candid photos, but I really like to capture the moment when everyone gets together and poses for the whole wedding panorama. Most people going to a wedding are not included in the wedding photos. I think they should be. This is the large group wedding panorama portrait of everyone at Elizabeth and Jason's wedding. OK, well maybe it is not a large group, compared to some weddings where they have more than 400-500 in attendance, but is was large compared to the smaller groups of the family and wedding party. Elizabeth was so sweet and Jason , a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, getting ready to head out for Iraq soon, looked so correct and dashing in his formal dress uniform.

I really like the look of these panoramic black and white wedding photographs. A beautiful and intimate wedding with a view of the Olympics and Puget Sound. The Pioneer Park Pavilion in Steilacoom, WA. was a great place on a wonderful day. I will post some of the other wedding photos later on in the week as I finish editing them. There are a lot of great candid wedding photographs I look forward to sharing.

I just wanted to explain clearly for those new to the style of wedding photography know as wedding photojournalism exactly what is meant by the term.

Wedding Photojournalism also known as Documentary Wedding Photography is what most wedding couples seek out when searching for just the right photographer since it captures their special day and all of its memories. Many of the bridal magazines circulating today have conflicting information which only complicates a search for the right wedding photographer.

Often times when a bride looking to sort out the confusion over the term photojournalism needs only read a newspaper and see the storytelling photographs they publish. "Wedding Photojournalism" was coined by professional newspaper and magazine photojournalists to describe the kind of photography they practiced when they accepted commissions to photograph weddings. They were anxious to make sure people would distinguish the difference between the kind of photography they practiced in contrast to the traditional studio wedding photographers whose only work was almost entirely posed and highly styled wedding and portrait photography. Wedding Photojournalist's work is best described as a documentary approach to wedding photography focusing on real moments, instead of staged moments. Instead of stopping action to get their staged posed shot, they stayed in the background and looked for real interactions and emotions that told the story of the day.

Wedding magazines soon picked up on the new trend and made it the "hot" fashion for wedding photography. This forced traditional wedding photographers to hop on the photojournalism bandwagon as well, including those without the real skills to do photojournalism. What they did was fake the "look" of photojournalism's real moments by staging faked real moments that almost look like they are are real. the problem is the wedding couple still know every time they see the photo that was faked. Also adding to the confusion, several other styles developed during the same period – elements of fashion photography, beauty photography, and fine art photography were all being used in wedding photography.

Hiring a wedding photojournalist does not mean having to give up on having posed portraits at your wedding. Newspaper photographers have always been assigned to make been portraits of various subjects from movie stars to Presidents and the people next door since the first newspaper photographs were published. Most wedding photojournalists focus on relaxed portraiture – a directed image where the subject may or may not be looking at the camera. While such images may give the impression of being candid, a wedding photojournalist would never try to pass off the picture as a real moment. A wedding photographer to be successful today must dabble in several approaches in addition to newspaper photojournalism, for example mixing in some of the editorial fashion look and not just focusing on only one style in particular.

Some traditional photographers insisted photojournalism was merely a fad or a “buzzword.” But the buzz has persisted and many of the country’s top wedding photographers use a photojournalistic documentary approach. We are now past the point of calling photojournalism a fad. It’s simply what many brides want. With many newspapers across the country laying off their staff photographers due to the rise of the internet, many of the top wedding photojournalists nowadays come directly from the newspaper industry, where they were leaders in the photojournalism field and most of the experienced wedding photojournalists have a great understanding of their digital camera and computer equipment. Today's discerning brides and grooms will pick the photographer that is right for them based on style and budget. For most of them, true to life real wedding photojournalism by a real photojournalist is the right choice for telling the story of their day.

Olivia Gunn and Adam Bergsneider were married August 23rd at Freeland Hall on Whidbey Island in a beautiful ceremony on a perfect Pacific Northwest summer day, on the shores of Puget Sound.

Photographing Group Wedding Pictures

Everybody wants to be a photographer.

Nowadays at weddings it seems every wedding guest brings along their own little point and shoot digital camera to capture every moment of the event for themselves.
As a wedding photographer, I sometimes run into a number of situations at weddings that present an obstacle to my taking a really good group photograph of the wedding party or family portrait.

Candid unposed shots of real moments as they unfold make up the majority of photographs I make at weddings. Most of the time I have no problem with wedding guests taking pictures around me during the day unless they are jumping up directly in front of my camera to take a photo of the bride and groom just as they come marching down the aisle. That has actually happened a couple of times and is something I still can't get a kick out of.

But often at a number of weddings every year, while I am making the few formal group photographs of the wedding party and family portraits, friends or other family members with their own little digital camera, want to stand right next to me, or off to one side or another, as they attempt to get the photo I have just arranged.

There is often a lot of stress at that moment since we are on a very tight schedule, very often running way behind the schedule (I often find myself reassuring the bride just about then “Don’t worry. They can’t start the wedding without you!). Usually these formal posed portraits are taken just before the time guests begin to arrive for the wedding ceremony. It is tricky to stop and explain why I do not want anyone else around with cameras. I try as diplomatically as possible to plead to them to stop. Do they? Often they pretend to not hear me or ignore me or act offended if they do acknowledge my entreaties.

Later, during the reception, some of these people come up and tell me they think the reason I didn't want them taking a photo then was because I was afraid of losing revenue from print sales or that I was feeling jealous. That is not the case. My business model does not depend upon after wedding print sales. The reason is that I want everyone in my posed group photo to be all looking in the same direction - at me.

When several cameras are pointing at a group of people posing for a picture, it is natural for some people to look off to the left at one camera, some off to the right at another camera, and the rest will be looking at my lens. When the photograph is later printed large enough to really see it, everyone looking off in different directions has a disconcerting psychological effect on the viewer. (Click on the above photo to see it larger and you will see what I mean). To these guests off to the side with their own cameras, the photo they think they see me making is just a photo of a group of people. The picture I am actually trying to make though, is of a set of pairs of eyeballs and I want to photograph all of them looking directly at my lens. Nothing destroys a good group photo more than if some are looking off right, some to the left, and some right at the lens on my camera. A print of a group picture is most satisfying when every set of eyes is looking directly at the viewer of the photograph. Anything else is a reject photo when it comes time for editing after the wedding.

The best strategy I have discovered is to try to politely ask them to wait until after I have finished my shot, and then they can take their turn. Amazingly, this actually works sometimes. When I shoot, I always make multiple shots of each group to insure that there is at least one frame with no half closed eyes caught as people blink. When I am finally done I signal to them that they can rush in and take their turn. That way we all get a good picture, and everyone is happy as long as it doesn't put us too far behind the schedule. (Never make the wedding planner or the church ladies angry by holding up the start time of the ceremony. They never forget.) The aspiring photographers should keep in mind that the bride and groom have hired a professional photographer at great expense to make their wedding photographs so as to ensure sure that their wedding album will end up looking great. If they really need to get their own print of the photo, they can get a copy of my picture from the wedding couple later. If they insist on to making their own version,they need to be patient and wait a little until I have finished making the photo for the bride and groom. That way the stress will subside and we can all enjoy the wedding.

The Styles of Seattle Wedding Photographers

Finding the Style of Seattle Wedding Photography That Works For You.

In the beginning, wedding photography was in black and white and the cameras were big and bulky so most wedding photographs were carefully posed. Then came color photography and smaller lighter 35mm cameras and more photographers began to try and shoot candid pictures.

Over time, different styles have developed and you may find yourself attracted to one style over another. All of them can be in black and white or color. With the coming of digital, all photos are made in color but can be converted to black and white without any degradation, so it is just a matter of your taste and the style you find yourself attracted to.

Traditional and Photojournalistic are the two primary approaches to wedding photography that the majority of wedding photographers practice today. Classically posed images and a great deal of photographer direction and interaction on the day of the wedding are the hallmarks of the approach of the Traditional Wedding Photographer. The poses dictated by the photographer have been practiced since the days of the big bulky cameras by traditional wedding photography studios and have served them well over the years. Your parent’s wedding was most likely photographed in this style.

Editorial photography style with an emphasis on telling a story of the day with unposed candid pictures, with little photographer direction and interaction best describes the Photojournalistic Wedding Photographer approach. The emphasis in photojournalism is on capturing the story, atmosphere, details and emotion of the day, so the viewer has an appreciation of what the wedding was like, rather than a series of pre-determined poses.

Photojournalism is easier to define, as the term infers the photography is by its nature similar to journalism, where the emphasis is upon reporting and recording events in a newsworthy manner and the photos are more about you than a predetermined pose.

There is now a new approach that sprung up in the last couple of years. This third style of wedding photography, which has lately been gaining popularity, is a contemporary fashion magazine approach. This approach blends elements of the editorial photojournalistic approach with the kind of highly styled posed fashion pictures that find their inspiration in magazines like Vogue or Elle or Vanity Fair. Most of the photographers who follow this approach rely heavily on post-production processing in Photoshop to give their images an over saturated romantic look, sometime layering texture patterns over the picture. Just as the fashion magazines use Photoshop to digitally enhance all of their pictures, this style leans in the direction of fantasy, depicting the bride and groom as glamorous models in an exotic location. Contemporary fashion wedding photography may include an element of photojournalism but is not exclusively that style of photography. The digital manipulations create a more artistic and dreamy look than straight, non enhanced photojournalism alone conveys.

As a matter of course, some photographers blend elements of all these styles in their practice of wedding photography. In fact, due of the rise in popularity of the photojournalistic approach which has been considered hot the last five or six years, many traditional wedding photographers have adapted to the times by creating poses that mimic the look of candid photojournalistic pictures. The poses often look stiff compared to true to life candid pictures, but they offer a different look from their older poses. A number of straight photojournalistic photographers are adopting elements of the fashion magazine approach to some of their photographs.

Consider all three approaches when you look through the online portfolios of wedding photographers before you find the one who you think will best convey the elements your own style.

Meredith and Michael were married at St Mary's Church August 9th.

The reception was held at La Spiga Restaurant on Capital Hill.
Fantastic Italian food. A beautiful space for a party, with the high balcony
overlooking all of the festivities below.

ALthough it rained after the ceremony, a rainbow came out and we made itto the roof for some photos.

Meredith and Michael were married on August 9th at St. Mary's Church. I am almost finished with the edit but I wanted to put this composite shot up, It was made by combining two adjacent frames to make a digital wedding panorama thanks to photoshop.
As soon as the edit is done I will post some more photographs. If you check this blog regurlary, you will remember that this is the same wedding where the rainbow came out during the reception and I got a good shot of them with the rainbow in the background.

Sheina and Tim will be getting married Sunday September 14th 2008 at the Meydenbauer Yacht Club in Bellevue. We made this photo up in Kerry Park on Queen Anne a couple of weeks ago. I am looking forward to photographing their wedding this weekend. I t will be my first wedding at the Meydenbauer Yacht Club.

A Wedding Celebration - Amy + Jonathan's Wedding at DeLille Cellars

I had the pleasure to photograph the wedding of Amy Lowell Arnold and Jonathan White Keljo at DeLille Cellars and their beautiful grounds in Woodinville, WA. Sunday, August 31st. I just wanted to post a quick taste of some of the wonderful pictures captured during Amy and Jonathan's special day. The photo at the top of the blog is from their ceremony under the trees at the winery.

The cake was specially ordered to commemorate the meeting of Amy and Jonathan on a skiing outing on Crystal Mountain. It tasted very good too.

Their first dance was a waltz which dazzled everyone in attendance it was so well practiced.

The Smores were a big treat for people during breaks from the dance floor.

Wedding Planner Kelly Simants of Sweet Pea Events coordinated the event which went off without a hitch. Spiritborne Videography captured the wedding on video and the DJ and sound system was by Emerald City Productions. The catering was done by Seasoned In Seattle and the food was delicious. Photographer and old friend Paul Joseph Brown and I again got to shoot another great wedding together.

A Seattle Wedding Photographer at Laura + Ezra's Seattle Tennis Club Wedding

Came back from a wedding at the Seattle Tennis Club pretty late last night. Here is Ezra getting the first look of his bride to be Laura from all angles at the entrance to the Seattle Tennis Club on a extremely rare rainy Sunday in mid August. What a beautiful dress.Laura and Ezra's spirits remained high all day despite the fact that the wedding which was supposed to take place outside on the grass, got moved indoors due to the rain all day. We were hoping it would blow away but it never did. It is continuing through Monday. What a month. The chance of a sunny day for their date was supposed to be 99.7%.

Above is a shot of Ezra and Laura having their first dance out on the floor just after they made their appearance at the reception.
They looked great dancing together. The dancing really took off after that.

Kirstie Warren of Simple Wed was the fantastic planner for this wedding.
She made everything happen smoothly in spite of the plans having to be changed at the last minute due to rain.

I had the privilege of covering this wedding with photographer Paul Joseph Brown. Working with one of your oldest friends makes the day a lot of fun. We go way back to when we attended Ohio University Graduate School of Journalism together.

4 Years After The Wedding

So 4 years after Pam and Gary got married I was called in to photograph their beautiful 4 month old baby daughter Anna.
It was one of those rare hot and sunny summer afternoons we get here in Seattle. but Anna was taking it really well. It is so fantastic to get the chance to photograph the children of the couples whose wedding I have photographed. It is the rest of the story that started years ago, and it continues on.

A Rainbow Wedding

I just had to add this wonderful wedding photograph from Meredith and Michael's wedding on August 9th. It had rained a lot the day of the wedding, in fact we had to call off the formal group photos we had planned outside the restaurent in from of a wall of grafitti. But sometime after the cake cutting and toast I took them up on the roodf deck when I saw that the sun had broke free just before sunset. When we got out on the roof we saw this rainbow and thats when I made this photograph.

All's well that ends well.

Sugar Magno and Chris Olivar had a Wedding of Prosperity on 8.8.08 Friday night at The Seattle Space Needle. It was a wonderful evening on a very special date at a Seattle landmark high above Seattle Center, the location of the World's Fair in 1962.

The Space Needle is 605 feet high and when it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. The wedding was at the Skyline level but after the ceremony we went up the the observation deck at the top for some photographs.

Reminding me of the popular recent book by author and journalist Stieg Larsson "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", Sugar arrived with her beautiful dress ready to slip on which she did with the help of her mom.

The flowers including the bouquet were orchids.

Her Dad and Mom walked her down the aisle.

It was beautiful and intimate ceremony up there at the top of the Space Needle as the sun was starting to set.

This was the largest of the 5 wedding cakes and they were topped with orchids flown in from Hawaii, which is where Sugar and Chris went for their honeymoon.

Sugar and Chris cut the cake which tasted as wonderful as it looks.

Every table was decorated with a bowl of orchids.

Chris and Sugar were toasted by friends and family as they awaited dinner.

The cut of the dress really showed off Sugar's dragon tattoo. Later on they had a dollar dance and which was as much fun photographing as it was for the family and friends attaching bills to the wedding couple as they danced to the music of the Pacific Islands. The band was fantastic and people danced through the evening.
